I was born and educated in the United States, where I received a B.A. in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1976), with an emphasis on psycholinguistics. I acquired my near-native fluency in Portuguese during a 23-year residency in Brazil, where I still maintain an active translation business.
I hold certification from the American Translators Association (ATA) in Portuguese-to-English translation, as well as CoreCHI certification as a medical interpreter.
From 1982 to 1986, I served as translator and interpreter for the Australian Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro, where my work focused primarily on areas of commercial interest to Australia and on general topics in Brazilian politics, economics, and current events. As part of my duties, I interpreted for visiting businessmen and for government dignitaries up to the ministerial level.
In 1997, I taught Portuguese-to-English literary translation at the Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro.
I have also been a healthcare interpreter since 2007 and was among the first group of medical interpreters to earn CCHI core certification, in 2011.
I am very active in my local translator and interpreter community and served as Board Member of the Midwest Association of Translators and Interpreters (MATI) from 2011 to 2014.
