POETRY
I do believe poetry is best translated by poets. Which I am not. But how could I resist the stars raining down gold over the skies of Ouro Preto or Friar Antônio's linguistic jigsaw puzzle about God, guilt, and procrastination? Or what Marina Colasanti discovers when she peers into her closet? I couldn't, and I didn't, and for what it's worth, here are the results of some adventures outside my comfort zone.

MY TRANSLATION
Vila Rica The tawny gold of the gloaming coppers the old houses. By ambition torn in the tortured bowels of noble earth, The mines bleed out trickles of gold, And each wound like an ember blazes. A mournful knell afar, chimes the Angelus. The final gold of the sun dies into the mist. Shrouding this glorious poor city, In extreme unction, stark twilight falls. Now, beyond hilltops, the heavens become As antiqued gold, turned black by time. Brushing the ground, the fog breathes a prayer. Like a spectral procession in march Knolls the bell…Weeps a verse of Dirceu. On sad Ouro Preto, the gold of the stars rains down. |
ORIGINAL TEXT

MY TRANSLATION
God asks a faithful account of my time, one must for time indeed account; but without time how to thus account, I who to no account wasted so much time? To render my account in all good time I was granted time yet rendered no account. I wanted not, time sparing, to render my account. Now I want to render my account yet have no time. O ye who take not into account ye have time, do not waste away thy time in vain pastime: Mind ye render thy account whilst there is time. Ah! but if they who can account their time would of this time more rightfully account they would not as I lament not having time. |
ORIGINAL TEXT

MY TRANSLATION
And Thou receivest him in Thy arms, Down from the cross where he lay bared To the impious eye of a wretched crowd Who revileth his hallowed face. His tender bosom filled with blood As splendorous rays of a setting sun, O Vine of the Lord, exalted Vine Celestial branch of ethereal must. Blood spilling forth in swells Which for man’s salvation flows In gentle scarlet leaves Him spent. And in flowing as it floweth then, For all our days shall we be saved -- Eternal mystery of the Eucharist. |
ORIGINAL TEXT

All those Baroque dreams Sliding away down the stones. Pebbled courtyards. Stairways. Apothecary shops. Bridges. Small talk. Some people arriving, some people passing. And ideas. |

MY TRANSLATION
Open closet door I open the door of my closet as I open a diary. There hangs my life my worn-out daily existence no secrets intimacy exposed that no button will defend no pocket secure, a truer mirror than any other holding up to scrutiny the measures of my body. Closet tabernacle of my room which I open in the morning as if at a window to consecrate the ritual of my day. Blue Beard's parlor cluttered with pendants long skirts and veils entangled yet trickling no blood. Decapitated bodies my hands missing from limp sleeves. From the closet my clothes pursue me like a chest of heirlooms or maledictions. Skins of mine hanging at rest silent guardians of my perfumes more delicate textures of myself that light washes out that time wears away that moths nibble at still, they'll last much longer on their hangers than I on my bones. I won't take a single one. I'll go unclothed leaving behind me an open door. |
MY TRANSLATION
Nenhuma levarei. Irei despida deixando atrás de mim a porta aberta. |
